State of the Union Address Televised presidential speech that sets forth the programs and policies he/she wants Congress to put into effect as laws
Foreign Policy Government's plan for interacting with the other countries of the world.
Diplomacy The art of interacting with foreign governments.
Treaties Written agreements two countries make together.
Reprieve Postpones the carrying out of a person's sentence.
Pardon Forgives a person of his/her crime and eliminates the punishment.
Commutation Reducing a person's sentence.
Secretary The title of most of the president's cabinet members.
Attorney General The head of the Dept of Justice.
Ambassadors Highest ranking US representatives in foreign countries.
Embassy Official residence and offices of an ambassador in a foreign country.
Consul Represents US commercial interests in foreign countries.
Consulate US consul's office in most large foreign countries.
Passports Formal documents that allow US citizens to travel abroad.
Visas Allow foreigners to come to the US.
Joint Chiefs of Staff The group that advises the president on military affairs.
Dept. of Homeland Security Est. after 9/11/01 to protect the nation against further terroristic attacks.
Independent Agencies Created by congress to perform a specialized job.
Regulatory Commissions Type of independent agency that has the power to make rule and bring violators to court.
Bureaucracy All of the employees of the regulatory commissions and independent agencies as well as those of the executive departments.
