Poetry Terms for Riley's Language Arts 7th Grade Class

| abstract | expressing a quality or characteristic apart from any specific object or instance |
| stanza | an arrangement of a certain number of lines, forming a division of a poem |
| extremity | the extreme or terminal point, limit, or part of something |
| rhyme scheme | pattern of rhymes used in a poem, usually marked by letters to symbolize correspondences, as rhyme royal, ababbcc |
| verse | a succession of metrical feet written, printed or orally composed as one line; one of the lines of a poem |
| line | groups of words; how poetry is divided |
| refrain | a line or group of lines that is repeated at regular intervals |
| lyric | having the form and musical quality of a song |
| inversion | the practice of changing the conventional placement of words |
| repetition | words or phrases are repeated for emphasis |
| parallelism | a balance of two or more similar words, phrases or clauses |
| free verse | when a poem doesn't us rhyme |
| ballad | a poem that tells a story |
| epic | a long, narrative poetic work in which a hero undertakes various tasks of an unusually elevated style, celebrating the legends of a hero |
| sonnet | a type of lyric poem with fourteen lines; it means "little song" or "little sound" |
| quatrain | a stanza or poem of four lines usually with alternate rhymes. |
| limerick | a kind of humorous verse of five lines, in which the first, second and fifth lines rhyme with each other and the third and fourth lines, which are shorter, form a rhymed couplet |
| eulogy | a type of lyric poem that commemorates the dead and are melancholy, mournful and contemplative. |
