Force & Motion

QuestionAnswer
force a push or a pull
balanced force when a force doesn’t change an object’s position
unbalanced force when one force is stronger on one side and does change an object’s position
motion an objects change in position over time
Friction is a force that slows down an object, it also creates heat
Gravity a force that describes the pull between masses - measured by springs
magnetism a force that can push or pull another object that has magnetism like iron or nickel
inertia an objects’ resistance to change
Weight how strongly gravity pulls on an object
Mass the amount of material in an object
speed how fast an objects’ position changes over time
velocity the measurement that combines both speed and direction
momentum the motion of an object and its resistance to slowing down- a bowling ball has more momentum than a balloon
acceleration the change in velocity of an object over time (Could mean either going faster or slower)
deceleration the decrease of change in velocity of an object over time
potential energy stored energy
kinetic energy energy of motion
frame of reference a group of objects from which you can measure position or motion
Position The position of an object is its location relative to another object (the reference point) for example “above”, “below”, “beside”, “behind”, “ahead of” plus the distance from the other object.
Direction Direction of motion is the course or path that an object is moving and can be determined by reading a compass using the terms “north”, “south”, “east”, or “west.”

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
