| Algebraic expression | An expression that contains numbers, operations and one or more symbols |
| Coefficient | The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable |
| Variable | A symbol, usually a letter that stands for an unknown number |
| Term | Parts of an algebraic expression separated by addition or subtraction signs |
| Constant | A term without a variable |
| Inverse Operations | Opposite Operations |
| Addition Property of Equality | When you add the same number to each side of an equation, the two sides remain equal |
| Equation | A mathematical sentence that uses an equal sign to show that two expressions are equal. |
| Equation in Two Variables | Equation that represents two quantities that change in relationship to one another. |
| Equivalent Expressions | Expressions with the same value |
| Solution of an Equation | A value that makes an equation true |
| Subtraction Property of Equality | When you subtract the same number to each side of an equation, the two sides remain equal |
| Division Property of Equality | When you divide each side of an equation by the same number, the two sides remain equal |
| Multiplication Property of Equality | When you multiply each side of an equation by the same number, the two sides remain equal |
| Multiplicative Inverse Property | The product of a nonzero number and its reciprocal is 1 |
