| Imagery | descriptive or figurative language used to create word pictures. |
| motif | a recurring element image, or idea in a work of literature |
| Setting | the time and place in which a narrative occurs |
| atmosphere | the feeling created by a literary work or passage |
| mood | the overall emotional quality of a work, which is created by the authors language and tone and subject matter |
| flashback | a sudden and vivid memory of an event in the past, or the interruption of a sequence of events in the plot of a story to relate events that occurred in the past |
| foreshadowing | clues or hints signaling events that will occur later in the plot |
| point of view | The perspective from which a story is told (1st, 2nd, or 3rd person) |
| conflict | a struggle between opposing forces |
| subplot | a secondary plot that occurs along with a main plot |
| allusion | a reference to a well-know person, place, event, literary work, or work of art |
| subordinate | lower in rank or position |
| perspective | the way a specific character views a situation or other characters |
| interpret | a writers or artists representation of the meaning of a story or idea |
| annotated bibliography | a list of citation to books or articles and documents |
| Literal Questions | found directly in text; you can answer question on the literal by looking to the text directly |
| Universal Questions | these questions go beyond the text that require you to think about the larger issues or ideas |
| Verb | expresses an action or state of being |
| conjunctions | a state of being joined together ;join words or word groups |
| appositive | renames or identifies another noun or pronoun |
| Active Voice | subject performs the action |
| Passive Voice | subject receives the action |
| Interpretive Questions | you cannot find answers in text but textual evidence is supported |
