Tangerine Vocabulary

Unit 3 terms

Imagery descriptive or figurative language used to create word pictures.
motif a recurring element image, or idea in a work of literature
Setting the time and place in which a narrative occurs
atmosphere the feeling created by a literary work or passage
mood the overall emotional quality of a work, which is created by the authors language and tone and subject matter
flashback a sudden and vivid memory of an event in the past, or the interruption of a sequence of events in the plot of a story to relate events that occurred in the past
foreshadowing clues or hints signaling events that will occur later in the plot
point of view The perspective from which a story is told (1st, 2nd, or 3rd person)
conflict a struggle between opposing forces
subplot a secondary plot that occurs along with a main plot
allusion a reference to a well-know person, place, event, literary work, or work of art
subordinate lower in rank or position
perspective the way a specific character views a situation or other characters
interpret a writers or artists representation of the meaning of a story or idea
annotated bibliography a list of citation to books or articles and documents
Literal Questions found directly in text; you can answer question on the literal by looking to the text directly
Universal Questions these questions go beyond the text that require you to think about the larger issues or ideas
Verb expresses an action or state of being
conjunctions a state of being joined together ;join words or word groups
appositive renames or identifies another noun or pronoun
Active Voice subject performs the action
Passive Voice subject receives the action
Interpretive Questions you cannot find answers in text but textual evidence is supported
