QuestionAnswer
adaptation When animals change behavior or appearance over time in response to environment.
natural selection Process in which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than others do.
Why can many insects adapt quickly to insecticides? The insects generation time is short.
What evidence of natural selection is available today that was not available to Darwin? Differences in genes create variation.
Evolution The process by which populations slowly change over time.
speciation A process that begins when a portion of a population becomes physically or geographically isolated.
trait A specific characteristic that can be passed from parent to offspring.
What process would farmers use to produce vegetation that will grow in a specific climate? selective breeding
selection When certain genes make organisms more likely to survive and reproduce.
If two organisms have similar traits and DNA, they probably share a what? ancestor
fossil The remains or imprint of a once-living organism found in layers of rock.
Populations are limited by what? starvation, disease, competition, and predation
What are the four parts of natural selection? overproduction, inherited variation, struggle to survive, and successful reproduction.
speciation Process of separation, adaptation, and division.
species A group of organisms that can mate with one another to produce fertile offspring
fossil record A timeline of life provided by the remains of imprints of dead organisms.
whales Modern ocean-dwelling mammals that are descended from ancient land-dwelling mammals.
Charles Darwin A naturalist who proposed that evolution happens through natural selection.
population Grpups of individuals of the same species living in the same place.
genetics Modern knowledege that helps explain Darwin's theory.
Darwin could not answer all of the questions regarding his new theory because he did not know about what? genetics
inherited variation When an organism's offspring is not identical to it.
Minerals seeping inot an organism's remains forms what? fossils
Why is the Earth's fossil record incomplete? Specific conditions are required for fossils to form.
What evidence supports the theory that whales evolved from land-based mammals? Unused hip bones, whales are mammals, and the fossil record.
