Auschwitz-Birkenau | The largest Nazi death camp, located in southwestern Poland near the city of Krakow. Over 1 million Jews murdered, while thousands worked as slave laborers. Aushwitz II serviced I.G. Farbencompany & manufactured Bunda, a synthetic rubber. |

Bergen-Belsen | concentration camp in northern Germany for detainment of prisoners of war & other "exchangeable" prisoners. As war ended, conditions deteriorated & 34,168 people perished from disease & malnutrition. The camp was liberated by Allied troops spring 1945. |
Concentration camps | prison camps that held Jews, Gypsies, political and religious opponents of Nazis, resistance fighters, homosexuals, & other "enemies of the state." People died of starvation, disease, hard labor, & exhaustion. |

ghettos | areas of cities in eastern Europe in which Jews were forced to live in extreme, overcrowded conditions with little food, medicine, heat, and sanitation. In 1941, ghetto inhabitants were sent to concentration and death camps. |
Holocaust | the systematic state-directed genocide of six million Jews and others during World War II. The word "Holocaust" means to burn completely. |
Liberation | the action or process of trying to obtain freedom and equal rights. |
National Socialist German Worker's Party | The Nazi Party; a right-wing, anti-Semitic, nationalist party led by Adolf(ph) Hitler during his reighn of power. |
persecution | the act or practice of harassing or annoying those who differ in origin, religion or social outlook. |
