| Acrimonious | caustic, biting, or rancorous; bitter, ill will | The prisoner of war had acrimonious remarks for those that mistreated him. |
| Ameliorate | to make better, to relieve, to improve | Social workers attempt to ameliorate the lives of people living in the worst conditions. |
| Amenable | open or willing to follow advice or suggestion, tractable, malleable | Since I usually agree with him, I am always amenable to listening to hi ideas. |
| Amorphous | shapeless, having no definite form | In the science fiction movie, the amorphous mass terrorized the town. |
| Buoyant | capable of floating; cheerful | Because the log was buoyant, it stayed afloat. The girl's buoyant spirit made her pleasant company. |
| Cajole | to persuade with deliberate flattery, to coax, to wheedle | I will not be cajoled into allowing you to stay up past your bedtime. |
| Calamity | a serious event causing distress or misfortune | The earthquake in Mexico was a calamity. |
| Debase | to reduce in dignity or quality | Do not debase yourself by swearing. |
| Efface | to erase, to wear away | The date on the coin has been effaced due to constant rubbing against other coins. |
| Elucidate | to make clear, to explain | I will try to elucidate some of the important changes in the tax code. |
| Ephemeral | lasting a short period of time, fleeting | The butterfly had an ephemeral lifespan; it died a week after leaving the cocoon. |
| Ferocity | savagery | A tiger is an animal that has ferocity. |
| Flourish | to thrive, to grow well | The company flourished after a new board of directors took control. |
| Haughty | arrogant, excessively proud and vain | Being the quarterback of the football team does not give him the right to be haughty. |
| Impervious | incapable of being entered or penetrated, not capable of being damaged | Because the watch is impervious to water, I can wear it when I swim. |
| Inane | lacking significance, meaning, or point; silly, insispid | Your inane comments are preventing an intelligent discussion of the topic. |
| Indolence | Laziness | The hot and humid weather in the tropics encourages indolence. |
| Infallible | incapable of error | Since everyone makes mistakes, no human is infallible. |
| Inscrutable | difficult to understand; mysterious | He had us confused with his inscrutable smile. |
| Languid | slow, sluggish, listless, weak | The old man's walk was languid, each step requiring great effort. |
| Malice | desire to harm others | His death was caused by malice and was not accidental. |
| Oblique | slanting, indirect, evasive, devious, misleading | Because of the suspect's oblique answers, our interrogation of him led us in the wrong direction. |
| Opulence | wealth, affluence, abundance | Once people become millionaires, they feel their life should be filled with opulence. |
| Penitent | Showing or feeling regret for wrongdoing, repentant | He became penitent when he realized that his prank resulted in serious injury to the old man. |
| Perfunctory | Acting routinely with little interest or care | Due to his perfunctory manner of inspecting the factory, he did not notice some serious problems in the machinery. |
