Why was Moishe the Beadle deported? Because he was a foreign Jew
What happened to Moishe when he was taken away? He saw Jews digging their own graves, babies being thrown in the air as targets, was shot & pretends to be dead. He escapes
What does Moishe do when he returns to Sighet? He warns the Jews about the terrible things he saw, but no one believes him
How did the Nazis first treat the Jews when they arrived in Sighet? At first they were friendly, kind, and played with the kids

What rules did the Nazis give to the Jews? curfews, yellow stars, couldn't go certain places

What happened with Madame Schachter on the train? She hallucinated, thought she saw fire, screams about fire, the other Jews beat her up because of the noise she is making

What happens to Elie's family when they first arrive at the camp? they are split up
What ages do Elie and his father say they are? Elie says he is 18, his dad says he is 40
What were the conditions like in the concentration camps? terrible, forced to work, starving
What do Elie and Stein talk about? Stein asks Elie if he has seen his family, Elie lies and says yes, he did this so Stein would keep his hope
What happens after the factory foreman beats Elie? A French girl comforts him
What kept Elie from giving up hope? Keeping himself and his father alive
What happens when Elie's father is beaten by Idek? Elie is mad at his father for not staying out of Idek's way

What ended up happening to the patients that stayed in the hospital? They were freed

What happened with Rabbi Eliahou and his son during the march? his son abandoned him
How did Elie feel about what the Rabbi's son did to him? Elie vowed never to do this to his own father
How does Elie's father feel during the march? exhausted, he wants to sleep
Does Elie let his father sleep? Elie does not let his father sleep because he knows that if he sleeps, he will die
During the transfer to Buchenwald, what happens between the man and his son? Son kills his father for a crumb of bread
What happens to Elie during the transfer to Buchenwald? Elie is being strangled, Meir Katz saves him
What happens to Meir Katz? He dies on the train
What happens to Elie's father at Buchenwald? He gets dysentery, wants water, but water will only make his condition worse
When does Elie's father die? Before liberation
What is Elie's reaction to his father's death? He felt relief, wanted food
How do the prisoners react when they are first freed? they want to eat
What happens to Elie when he is freed he becomes sick, when he finally looks in the mirror, he sees a corpse staring back at him
