Plant Test

QuestionAnswer
What is a cell? smallest, most basic unit of an organism
List the parts of an Animal Cell. cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm
List the parts of a Plant Cell. cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplast, cell wall
What is the difference between an animal cell and a plant cell? a plant cell contains chloroplast and a cell wall
List in order from most basic form to most complex cells tissues organs organ systems organisms
Chloroplast: What is its function? The chloroplast is what makes the color green. This is where food is made through photosynthesis.
Cell Wall: What is its function? This is on the outside of the cell membrane. It is a protective covering and this is what gives the cell its rigid structure.
Where are they mostly located? Most plants live on land Some have adapted to wetland life
Plants are broken down into two main groups. What are they? Vascular or Nonvascular
Are plants autotrophs or heterotrophs? autotrophs
Are plants multicellular or unicellular? multicellular
Vascular: roots makes up about 80% of all plants these plants have special tissue in their stems to move water and nutrients up and down tissues allow plants to grow much taller grow in dry places
Nonvascular: no roots includes mosses, liverworts and ferns small in size, not tall found in wet places
What are the parts of a plant? roots, leaf, stem, flower (some)
What is the function of the root? to anchor the plant so it does not fall over absorbs water and minerals from soil
What is the function of the stem? supports the plant,
What is the function of the leaf? photosynthesis takes place here
What is the function of the flower? Reproduction
Pollination pollen is transferred from the male reproductive organs to the female reproductive organs to form seeds
Fertilization process that makes new seeds which grow into plants
Seed Dispersal scattering of seeds dispersed by wind, animals and water
Germination seed absorbs water; uses its stored food to begin to grow embryo’s roots grow downward the stem and leaves grow upward
cone: gymnosperms reproductive structure
ovule: structure on female cone that contains eggs (female sex cell)
pollen: structure on male cone that contains sperm (male sex cell)
pollination: transfer of pollen (wind, water, animals, human)
fertilization: pollen (sperm) and ovule (egg) unite to form seed
seed: structure that forms into a new plant
seed dispersal: transfer of seeds by wind, water or animals
gametophyte stage: part of life cycle involving egg & sperm
sporophyte stage: part of life cycle involving seed
Stamen - male reproductive part
Anther- produces pollen
Filament- stalk that supports anther
Sepal- protects developing flower
Stigma- sticky tip of pistil that collects pollen
Style- hollow tube that collects stigma to ovary
Ovary- structure where seed develops, contains egg
Petal- attracts insects and pollinators to flowers
Pistil- female reproductive part
Flowering Plant angiosperm
Non-Flowering Plant gymnosperm
Angiosperm vascular plants produces flowers and fruit with one or more seeds seeds held inside/fruit flowering plant made up of monocot and dicot plants reproduction: inside the flower angiosperms make up more that 8-% of all plants species (roses to palm tree
Gymnosperm vascular plant produces seeds that are not protected by fruit seeds held inside cone naked seed seed not enclosed in ovule non-flowering plant reproduction: male and female cones mainly represented by tree species Ex. pines, cedars, spruces, furs
What are the 3 main parts of the seed? seed coat, embryo, cotyledon
What is the function of the seed coat? the outer covering of a seed which protects the embryo and food from drying out
What is the function of the embryo? a young plant that develops from a fertilized egg
What is the function of the cotyledon? seed leaves food is stored in cotyledon in some seeds (bean plants)
Monocot one seed leaf (cotyledon)
Dicot multiple seeds (cotyledon)
Photosynthesis Sun + Water (H20) + Carbon Dioxide (CO2) ------> Food (glucose) + Oxygen (O2)
What is tropism? plant growth in response to a stimulus
What are 4 types of tropism? phototropism, thigmotropism, gravitropism, photoperiodism
Phototropism “photo” means light growth response of a plant to the direction of the light
Thigmotropism growth of a plant in response to touch/contact
Gravitropism a plants response to gravity
Independent Variable The independent variable in an experiment is what is being tested
Dependent Variable This changes during the experiment. It is “dependent” on the independent variable.
Control Variable These variables stay the same throughout the experiment. They do not change and instead remain constant.
