Types of Rocks and Fossil Fuels

TermDefinition
Rock A naturally occurring solid made from minerals.
Mineral Formed by earth's geological processes. *Ex. Gold, Salt
Sedimentary Rock A type of rock formed by the cementation and compaction of sediments. *Forms layers.
Sediment Material such as sand and silt that settles at the bottom of a liquid.
Cementation Cementing, or sticking, together.
Compaction Squeezing matter together with pressure.
Fossil The remains or impression of a once living organism.
Igneous Rock A type of rock that is formed from cooled magma or lava.
Metamorphic Rock A type of rock that is formed under the earth's surface with extreme heat and pressure.
Rock Cycle The continuous process of rocks forming and changing from one form to another.
Fossil Fuels Natural fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas that are formed from the remains of dead organisms.
Coal A fossil fuel formed in ancient swamps that is formed from the remains of dead plants. It is used to generate electricity.
Peat The first step in the formation of coal. *Made from dead plants.
Decay To decompose or break down.
Oil / Petroleum A type of fossil fuel that is formed in oceans from the remains of decayed organisms. It's main use is for transportation.
Natural Gas A type of fossil fuel formed similar to oil but it has no color. It is used for cooking and heating homes.
Nonrenewable Resources Resources that cannot be replaced during our lifetime because they take millions of years to form.
Renewable Resources Resources that can be replaced in a short amount of time such as trees, crops, and animals.
Inexhaustible Resources Resources that will never run out such as wind and solar power.
