Poetry/Clause Terms for Test

clause a word group that contains both a verb and its subject

subordinate clause a word group that contains both a verb and its subject but does not express a complete thought; also called dependent
figurative language writing/speech that is not meant to be taken literally
metaphor a figure of speech that describes one thing as something else
simile a figure of speech that compares two unalike things using "like" or "as"
personification a figure of speech that gives human qualities to something that is not human
symbol anything that represents something else
sound device enhance a poem's meaning
alliteration the repetition of beginning consonant sounds
repetition repeating a word, phrase, clause, or sentence to create an effect
assonance the repetition of a vowel sound in the middle of a word
consonance the repetition of the consonant sound at the end of a word
onomatopoeia a word that represents a sound
meter the rhythm of a poem
narrative poetry a poetry form that follows plot structure
haiku a poetry form that has 3 lines and 17 syllables: 5-7-5
concrete poetry a poetry form where the poet arranges the words on a page to create a picture of the poem's subject
