Representative Government: political system where voters elect representatives to make laws
Magna Carta: States citizens have basic rights, and kings must obey the laws
Confederation: loose alliance of the original 13 states
Albany Plan of Union: Proposal by Ben Franklin to create 1 government for the 13 colonies.
Second Continental Congress: Meeting in Philadelphia attended by all delegates; declared Independence
Articles of Confederation: first American constitution. It created a loose alliance among the 13 states.
New Jersey Plan Called for 3 branches of government with one chamber of congress with 2 reps from each state.
Habeas Corpus: Established under the Magna Carta that no person can be held in prison without being charged with a crime.
Executive: branch of government that carries out laws (President)
Virginia Plan: Called for 3 branches of government with 2 chamber of Congress, which would be established based on a state’s population.
House of Representatives: 1 of 2 chambers of Congress (based on a state’s population)
Federalist: favored or supported the early draft of the constitution
Amendments: Changes made to the United States Constitution
