Petroleum Unit A

QuestionAnswer
Crude oil unrefined liquid petroleum as it is pumped from the ground by oil wells.
Hydrocarbon A molecule composed only of carbon and hydrogen atoms
Viscosity A measure of "thick" liquids with resistance to flow. The thicker the fluid, the higher the measurement.
Alkane A hydrocarbon containing only single covalent bonds.
Lewis dot structure the representation of atoms, ions and molecules where valence-electrons dots surround each atom's symbol; it is useful for indicating covalent bonding.
Molecular formula a chemical expression indicating the total atoms of each element contained in one molecule of a particular substance
Covalent bond a linkage between two atoms involving the sharing of one pair (single bond), two pairs (double bond), or three pairs (triple bond) of valence electrons.
Isomer A molecule that has the same formula as another molecule and differs from it only by the arrangement of atoms or bonds.
Petroleum is a naturally occurring, flammable liquid found in rock formations in the Earth consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights, plus other organic compounds.
