QuestionAnswer
Climax The point of greatest tension after which the conflict is resolved.
Exposition Introduces the characters, setting, and conflict.
Protagonist The main character or hero of the story
Dynamic character A character that changes over the course of the story. For example, the coward becomes brave.
Round character A complex character with multiple personality traits.
Setting Setting can include: • Time • Location • Social or political context
Theme A theme is an idea that is explored in a text.
Symbolism Something represents more than itself. Use of a concrete object to represent an abstract idea. For example, a dove represents peace.
Metaphor When two unlike things are compared. For example: she is an angel.
Personification When a non-human thing is given human characteristics. For example: my toilet hates me.
Imagery Using words to create mental images. This includes visual imagery, auditory, tactile, thermal, olfactory, gustatory, and kinesthetic sensations.
Formalism Formalism refers to critical approaches that analyze, interpret, or evaluate the obvious features of a text.
Reader response it is a rejection of formalism, which believes that a text has a fixed meaning regardless of who is reading it
Marxism Marxism is what is known as a conflict theory because it states that society is in conflict with each other and Marxism claims that this conflict is between the rich and the poor
Feminism Feminist critique examines how men and women are represented/depicted in literature in terms of gender roles, norms and power relations.
Gender Societies understanding of femininity and masculinity. What are the expected gender norms and roles for men and women?
Norm Standards of proper or acceptable behavior
Status The position or rank of someone or something when compared to others in a society, organization, group, etc.
Patriarchy A family, group, or government controlled by a man or a group of men
Media Media refers to any form of mass communication (video, radio, print, internet, etc.).
