Properties of Matter

Matter Anything that takes up space and has mass
Mass A coherent, typically large body of matter in a substance
Volume The amount of space that a substance or object occupies
Qualitative observation A measurement based on description
Weight How much gravity is pushing on a substance
Quantitative measurement A measurement based on quantity
Physical property A property of a substance that you can observe with the 5 senses
Chemical property A property of a substance that changes it color, state, temp, etc.
Temperature A measurement of the average kinetic energy of the individual particle of an object
Polar/Non Polar Polar liquids have an uneven charge when Non Polar liquids have an even charge
Texture A characteristic physical structure of an object, based on the size, shape, arrangement, and proportions of its parts
Solubility A substance that is dissolved by another substance
Density The amount of mass of a given volume
Flammability How well a substance catches fire
Reactivity How a substance reacts to another substance
Ferromagnetism A basic mechanism that allows a substance to become magnet like or attract to magnets
Extensive property A property that changes when the size of the sample changes
Melting Point The point of temperature where a liquid freezes and becomes a solid
Boiling Point The point of temperature where a liquid turns into a gas
Conductivity The measure of a substances ability to conduct energy
Ductility The property that allows a substance to stretch, bend, or twist without breaking or cracking
Malleability The property that allows a substance to change shape by compressive forces without developing defects
Luster The state or quality of shining by reflecting light; glitter, sparkle, sheen, or gloss
Hardness The property of a substance to resist indentation or scratching
State/Phase @ 25 degrees Celsius (room temp) A substances natural state
