scarlet letter plot

plot and theme

QuestionAnswer
What were the three stages of the letter "A" throughout the story the scarlet letter 1. Adultery 2. Able 3. Angel
Pearls name as related to her character pearl means white, pure, definitely not sinful. To Hester, it means the pearl of great price, the pearl in Jesus' parable that is bought at "great price". Pearl was very pretty
The leech Chillingworth was referred to as a leech He was referred to this because he was Dimmesdale’s doctor and doctors are referred to as leeches. Leeches suck out all of the bad blood This is ironic bc we see Chillingworth is sucking the guilt out of Dimmesdale
The scaffold The scaffold symbolizes the cruel public exposure of private sins and the means of redemption through confession.
Sin and redemption Sin = when Hester commits adultery and now has to wear letter “A” on her bosom you can see that Hester is trying to redeem herself when Hester came out of her sentencing instead of running away Hester deciding to stay so that she can redeem herself
Good vs Evil Chillingworth: evil Hester represents: good
Revenge In story Chillingworths ultimate goal was to find who pearls father was and get revenge We see this when he interrogates both Hester and pearl Chillingworth also interrogates Dimmesdale but Dimmesdale ran out of the room before he could confess his crime
Passion vs responsibility we see that Hester is passionate for Dimmesdale even though Dimmesdale won’t take responsibility for was he did.
Individual vs society we see the struggle between the individual vs society 3 symbols of this is the wild roses, the scarlet letter and Pearl.
