Literary Terms

English terms for S1 final

TermDefinition
Setting The environment in which a story or event takes place
Protagonist The leading character in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text
Antagonist A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something
Theme The message of a story
Static Character A character who undergoes little or no inner change
Dynamic Character A character who undergoes an important inner change
Flat Character When characters are two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change
Round Character When characters are complex and undergo development
Tone The general character or attitude of a place
Sonnet A poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes
Iambic Pentameter A line of verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short syllable followed by one long
Couplet Two lines of verse, usually in the same meter and joined by rhyme
Quatrain A stanza of four lines
