| Term | Definition |

| Setting | The environment in which a story or event takes place |
| Protagonist | The leading character in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text |
| Antagonist | A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something |
| Theme | The message of a story |
| Static Character | A character who undergoes little or no inner change |
| Dynamic Character | A character who undergoes an important inner change |
| Flat Character | When characters are two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change |
| Round Character | When characters are complex and undergo development |
| Tone | The general character or attitude of a place |
| Sonnet | A poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes |
| Iambic Pentameter | A line of verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short syllable followed by one long |
| Couplet | Two lines of verse, usually in the same meter and joined by rhyme |
| Quatrain | A stanza of four lines |
