| Consonance | The repetition of consonant sounds, but vowels in a chunk of text |
| symbol | An object or action that means something more than its literal meaning |
| Meter | The measured arrangement of sounds/beats in a poem, including the poets placement of emphasis and the number of syllables per line |
| Stanza | A unified group of lines in poetry. This is often marked by spacing between section of the poem |
| Ballad | A story/narrative in poetic form |
| Rhythm | The recurrence of stressed and unstressed sounds in poetry. Depending on how sounds are arranged the ______ of a poem may e fast or slow,choppy or smooth |
| Assonance | Assonance The repetition of vowel sounds in a chunk of text |
| Theme | The central meaning of dominant message the poet is trying to deliver to the reader |
| Diction | The authors Specific word choice |
| Tone | The attitude the poems narrator (This may or may not be the actual poet) takes towards a subject or character:serious, humorous, sarcastic, ironic, concerned, tongue-in-cheek, solemn, objective, etc. |
| Free verse | Poetry that does not rhyme of have a measurable meter |
| Onomatopoeia | A word that sounds like what it means |
| Metaphor | A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things without using connecting words Such as "like" or "as" |
| Simile | A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things using connecting words such as "like" or "as" |
| Allusion | A brief reference to a real of fictional person,event,place, or work or art |
| Enjambment | This occurs when one line ends without a pause or any punctuation and continues onto the next line |
| Alliteration | The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words |
| Verse | A single line of poetry |
| Rhyme | Two or more words which match in the same last sound |
| Meaning and emotion | The language of poetry compresses meaning in just a few words. The compact expression intensifies emotions; every word may convey a powerful message |
| Personification | Language that gives human characteristics to inanimate objects animals or concepts |
| White Space | Indicates that the writer wants the reader to pause or be silent for a second |
| Line Break | The place where the poet chooses to end a line, often used to indicate rhythm or to represent meaning |
