Europe/Russia Vocab

TermDefinition
Transportation barrier A geographical feature that prevents or slows transportation (such as rocks along roads or waterfalls along rivers).
Transportation corridor A path where at least one main line of transportation (road rail or canal) has been built to improve movement from one area to another.
Foregin made in another country.
Domestic made within said country.
Demographics The characteristics of a human population such as age, income, and education.
Literacy The ability to read and write
Life expectancy How long someone is expected to live in a certain area
GDP (Gross Domestic Product) The total amount of goods and services produced by a country in a calender year
Manufacturing Using machines to make raw materials into a usable product.
Productivity Measurement of the amount of work completed/goods produced in a given amount of time
Socialism A system in which many businesses are owned and run by the government
Communism An economic system that is characterized by government ownership of wealth. Communism requires government ownership rather than private ownership of land, factories, and other economic resources. Communism usually uses force without regard to law.
Republic A form of government whose leader or leaders are elected, usually for a specific term.
Democracy Rule by many; form of limited government
Absolute monarchy King or Queen is born into power and has no limits.
Constitutional Monarchy King or Queen is born into power and shares power with elected officials.
Parliament The legislature (law making) group in the government of a parliamentary democracy (UK, Canada, India). They also elect the Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Is a government leader in a parliamentary government, and he is always a member of parliament
Genocide A large killing of a particular ethnic group or nation
Allies/Alliance Partnerships-France, Russia, and Britain, and the U.S. had one in WW II
Imperialism The practice of extending a nations influence by controlling other territories.
