Term | Definition |

Matter | Anything that has mass and occupies space. |
Element | A substance composed of a single kind of atom that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means. |
Periodic Table | An organized table of all the known elements. |
Atomic Number | The number of protons or electrons in an element. |
Atomic Symbol | An abbreviation for the element name. |
Atomic Mass | The mass of protons+neutrons(also called atomic weight or mass number). |
Compound | A substance in which two or more elements are chemically joined in a set ratio. |
Mixture | Two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined. |
Atom | The smallest unit of an element that retains (or keeps) the property of that element |
Nucleus | The central core of an atom that contains the protons and neutrons. |
Proton | Small, positively charged particles in the nucleus of an atom. |
Neutron | Small, uncharged particles in the nucleus of an atom. |
Electron | A tiny, negatively charged, high energy particle that moves in the space around the nucleus of an atom. |
Electron Shells | Fixed orbits or paths that electrons travel in around the nucleus. |
Molecule | Two or more atoms that are bonded together. |
Chemical Bond | The force that holds two or more atoms together. |
