PLD Descriptors
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Beginner Listener | Struggles to understand simple conversations and simple discussions. Struggles to identify individual words and phrases. Will remain silent watching for other cues. Speaker should use linguistic support such as visuals, slower speech and gestures. |
| Intermediate Listener | Understands simple routine directions as well as short conversations. For unfamiliar conversations will need extensive linguistic support such as visuals, slower speech, simplified language, pre-taught vocabulary, and gestures. Will seek clarification. |
| Advanced Listener | Understands longer,but may still need extra processing time. Understands most main points and details as well as some implicit details. Will occasionally request clarification from speaker. |
| Advanced High Listener | On level or comparable with a native speaker. Understands most conversations and directions. Rarely requiring clarification from the speaker. |
| Beginner Speaker | Uses short memorized phrases or highly familiar material with limited word bank. May give up easily or be hesitant to speak at all. |
| Intermediate Speaker | Speaks in simple manner and may hesitate for long periods to think about what they want to say. Emerging awareness of English grammar. Speak mostly in present tense and may have difficulty being understood by those no accustomed to interacting with ELLs. |
| Advanced Speaker | Ability to speak using grade appropriate English and participate comfortably in most conversations. Grasp of basic grammar but may mispronounce some words. Can be understood by most listeners. |
| Advanced High Speaker | Comparable to native speaking peers and communicate effectively using content based vocabulary. Uses complex sentences.May mispronounce words but rarely so that it effects their being understood. Can still have an accent from their first language. |
| Beginner Writer | Little to no ability to use English in writing. Lack English necessary to demonstrate elements of grade level writing. Ability to label, list, and copy. Only uses high frequency words/short sentences. Present tense. |
| Intermediate Writer | Limited ability to demonstrate or develop grade appropriate writing. Best writing is in familiar and concrete thoughts with short simple sentences. Sentence stems are useful. Writing may still be difficult to understand. |
| Advanced Writer | Uses English language with support to develop and demonstrate grade appropriate writing. Grasps basic verb tenses, grammar, and spelling patterns. Writing can be understood by those not accustomed to writing of ELLs. |
| Advanced High Writer | Writing is comparable to that of native speaking students. Occasional trouble with naturalness of writing and minimal errors associated second language acquisition. |
