Briefly describe the events leading to the election of Pope Pius VII. In 1798 the French army occupied Rome. In 1799 the pope was deported to Valence and he died on August 29th. The Church was in great disorder. The Church was without a pope for seven months until Pope Pius VII was elected on July 3, 1800.
Describe some of the changes brought about by the Concordat of 1801. The pope recognized the Republic as the legitimate government of France, and Napoleon recognized the pope as head of the French Church. Freedom of worship was again guaranteed. Seminaries, schools, hospitals, and charitable institutions were opened.
