QuestionAnswer
Pure Substance This is made up of one type of particle with definite chemical and physical properties.
Colloid This is a mixture where the particles are small and do not settle out quickly. They appear to be homogeneous, but are actually heterogeneous.
Compound This is a substance that has two or more different kinds of atoms chemically bonded together.
Atom This is considered the building block of matter.
Homogeneous In this type of mixture the substances are evenly (uniformly) spread out.
Element This is matter that cannot be broken down into anything simpler, and consists of one type of atom. All elements can be found on the periodic table of elements.
Heterogeneous This mixture is one that doesn’t have a uniform composition throughout.
Solution A mixture where one substance is dissolved in another.
Mixture This is a combination of two or more particles that are physically combined.
Suspension This is a mixture in which the particles are large and settle out after a while.
Mechanical Mixture This is a mixture in which two or more parts can be seen with the unaided eye. We can pick out the individual parts.
Molecule This is made up of two or more atoms that are chemically combined.
Give 3 examples of a solution Kool-Aid Salt Water Sugar Water
Give 3 examples of a suspension Orange Juice (with pulp) Italian Dressing Snow Globe
Give 3 examples of a colloid Milk Jello Whipped Cream
Solution (Drawing) draw small particles that are evenly distributed
Suspension (Drawing) draw large particles that are beginning to settle
Colloid (Drawing) draw medium sized particles
An element is a substance that is made up of one type of atom TRUE
Not all elements can be found on the periodic table FALSE, all elements can be found on the periodic table.
Matter is anything that has mass and color FALSE, matter is anything that has mass and takes up space
List 1 way compounds and mixtures are similar Made up of multiple elements
For a snack you eat salad dressing, jello, whipped cream, and apple juice. Classify each substance. Salad Dressing → SUSPENSION Jello → COLLOID Whipped Cream → COLLOID Apple Juice → SOLUTION
Which of these common substances is a homogeneous mixture: Table Salt Pure Water A Chocolate Chip Cookie Maple Syrup Maple Syrup
Which of the following does not belong: suspension Compound colloid solution Compound
Which of these substances is a compound? Potassium Chlorine Mercury Ammonia Ammonia
What type of substance is always made up of a single type of atom? Element
How are elements and compounds different? Elements are made up of a single type of atom while compounds are made up of multiple types that are chemically combined.
Why is water considered a pure substance? Water is considered a pure substance because it is a compound and is uniform throughout.
Which substance below is an example of a solution? Milk Brass Mercury Concrete Brass
