| Maternal Serum Screening --- MSS | blood test taken to test for spinal bifida and down's syndrome |
| spinal bifida | the spinal column fails to close properly |
| amniocentesis | a sample of amniotic fluid is taken from the sac around the fetus |
| Fragile X Syndrome | most common known hereditary cause of intellectual disabilities 1 in 4000 males and 1 in 6000 females |
| Prader -Willi Syndrome | inherited chromosome abnormality from father -- that creates medical conditions for child |
| Williams Syndrome | absence of material on the 7th pair of chromosomes |
| phenylketonuria --PKU | cannot convert phenylalanine to tyrosine---- need a special diet |
| microcephalus | head abnormally small and conic in shape |
| hydrocephalus | fluid inside or outside of the brain |
| fetal alcohol spectrum disorder-- FASD | born to women that have consumed large amounts of alcohol |
| Rubella ( German measles) | can cause blindness and mental impairment |
