| transition words/phrases | words or phrases that connect ideas, details, or events in writing |
| resolution | the end of a story |
| exposition | introduces the characters, the setting, and the conflict |
| rising action | a series of events that develops the conflict |
| climax | the most intense part of the story; the turning point at which the story’s outcome is determined |
| falling action | the event or events that set up the ending |
| genre | a category or type of literature, such as short story, folk tale, fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, poem, novel, play |
| point of view | the perspective from which the story is told. |
| tone | a writer’s or speaker’s attitude toward a subject |
| narrative | a type of writing that tells a story or describes a sequence of events in an incident. |
| connotation | the implied meaning or emotional association with a word—beyond its literal definition (can be negative or positive) |
| denotation | the exact, literal meaning of a word (dictionary definition) |
| theme | the underlying message or life lesson of a literary work |
| plot | the sequence of related events that make up a story or novel |
| figurative language | an imaginative language that is not to be taken literally |
| metaphor | a comparison between two unlike things in which one thing becomes another |
| simile | a comparison between two unlike things, using the words like or as |
| personification | gives objects or abstract ideas human characteristics |
| sensory language | words or information that appeal to the five senses |
| characterization | the methods a writer uses to develop characters through description, actions, and dialogue |
| external conflict | a character’s struggle with an outside force, such as another character, something in nature, or something in society |
| mood | the reader's emotional feeling of a work created by the author’s language and description of setting |
| vivid verbs | more precise and descriptive action words |
| dialogue | conversation between characters |
| symbolism | the use of an object, person, or a place that stands for/represents a larger idea (i.e. dove = peace) |
| genre | a category or type of literature, such as a short story, fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, poem, or play |
| onomatopoeia | words that imitate the sound they describe |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration used for emphasis |
| idiom | a figure of speech that cannot be defined literally |
| internal conflict | a character’s struggles with his or her own needs, desires, or emotions |
| imagery | descriptive or figurative language used to create a picture in the reader’s mind |
