What does the narrator say the windows in the house look like? They windows are "eye-like", suggesting that the house is "alive".
What two things does the “House of Usher” mean? "House of Usher" can literally mean the castle the Ushers live in or it can mean the family itself-the two are reflections (doubles) of each other.
What imperfection in the house does the narrator see, running from the roof all the way down to the foundation? The narrator sees a crack (fissure) running all the way from the roof line to the foundation. This suggests a "flaw" in the "House of Usher".
What had the illness Roderick suffered from done to his senses? The illness made all his senses super-sharp. He couldn't stand bright light, loud noises, tasteful food, strong smells, or certain materials against his skin.
What is Roderick’s sister’s name? Roderick Usher's sister's name is Madeline Usher.
What was one, significant symptom of Madeline's disease? Her disease caused her to fall into trances, not able to move or speak. It appeared as if she were dead during these trances.
What were all the books that Roderick had read about? All the books were about horror stories and magic. This creates a "scary" setting for what happens later.
What does Roderick tell the narrator has happened to Madeline? Roderick tells the narrator that his sister Madeline has died.
For how long does Roderick plan to wait until he buries her? He plans to wait two weeks (a fortnight) to bury Madeline.
What three reasons does Roderick give for waiting so long? One reason is to make sure she is dead. Another reason is that he doesn't trust the family doctor. Body-snatching was common at the time. The last reason is that the family burial ground is far away and hard to reach.
The vault they placed Madeline’s body in was directly under which room? The vault was directly under the narrator's bedroom.
What were the walls of the vault covered with? The walls of the vault were covered with copper.
What does the narrator learn about Roderick and Madeline as they are looking at her body in the coffin? The narrator learns that Roderick and Madeline were twins (another example of "doubles").
What does the narrator notice about Madeline before they put the lid on? (2 things) The narrator notices that Madeline's face is flushed and that she seems to have a smile on her lips.
In the book, what does Ethelred do as the narrator reads? Ethelred, the character in the book the narrator is reading, tears down a wooden door, making splintering, crashing sounds.
What sound does the narrator think he hears as he reads this? He thinks he hears, muffled as if coming from far away, a splintering, crashing sound as if someone were tearing through a wooden door.
What does the dragon in the story do as Ethelred hits it on the head with his mace? The dragon in the story makes a loud, grating scream.
What does the narrator hear just as he reads this part? He hears a loud, grating sound coming from far off, as if the copper door is grating along the copper floor of the vault and making a screeching sound.
n the story he is reading, what does the brass shield do as Ethelred approaches it and what sound does it make? In the story he is reading, the brass shield falls on the metal floor and makes a sound like a gong or a cymbal.
What sound does the narrator hear as he reads this part? He hears a gong-like metallic sound from below, as if someone were walking on, banging into, falling on the copper walls and floor of the tunnel leading to the vault Madeline was in.
What does Roderick say they have done to Madeline? Roderick says they have put Madeline in the coffin and vault while she's still alive.
What does he say he heard several nights ago? Roderick says he heard, with his super-sharp hearing, Madeline struggling to free herself from the coffin and vault.
Where does Roderick scream that Madeline is, right now! He screams that Madeline is standing just outside the bedroom door.
Who/What is standing in the door when the wind blows it open? Madeline is standing in the doorway when the wind blows it open.
What happens to Madeline and Roderick next? As she dies, she falls on Roderick who also dies as they fall to the ground.
What does the narrator immediately do? The narrator immediately runs out of the castle and across the causeway over the water.
What color is the moon when he is able to see it? The moon is blood-red as he looks back.
What happens to the “House of Usher”? The "House of Usher" crumbles and falls into the water in front of it.
