Nonfiction Vocabulary RJ3

QuestionAnswer
Narrative A type of nonfiction that tells the story of a person's life. It is about events that reallly happened. It informs and entertains. ie biography, autobiograpy.
Expository A type of nonfiction that gives facts and ideas, or explains a process. ie a newspaper article, essay, or how-to article
Persuasive A type of nonfiction that tries to convince the reader to take a point of view of change his or her opinions about a topic. ie editorial, advertisement, sales brochure
Reflective A type of nonfiction that offers insight into why an event or idea is important to an author. ie diary, letter
Chronological An organizational pattern that gives details in time order, from first to last. ie, 1, 2, 3 ....
Cause and Effect An organizational pattern that shows the relationship among causes and effects. ie the Titanic
Compare and Contrast An organizational pattern that presents two or more subjects and tells how they are alike and different. ie Dogs and cats as pets
Problem and Solution An organizational pattern that focuses on a problem and discusses a possible solution
Nonfiction A type of writing that provides information about real people, places, events, and ideas. The information is based on facts, actual experiences, and real-life situations.
Biography A type of narrative nonfiction that tells about someone's life. It is written by another person.
Autobiography Is a type of narrative nonfiction and the author tells his or her own story.
Narrative Essay Is a type of narrative nonfiction. It's a true story about real events that happened to real people. The author may or may not have been involved in the events.
Organization Pattern How the writing is organized. It helps to present the author's ideas and to understand the information in the text. It can also help you to understand the author's purpose for writing. ie. Problem-solution, Chronological
