Algebra Chapter 2 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Order of Operations rules that tell you which operations to do first
variable a letter that represents a number
terms parts of an expression separated by a + or - sign
constants numbers, or quantities, that do not change
coefficient a number that multiplies a variable
like terms terms that have the same variables with the same exponents
substitute replace a variable with a number
equation a statement that two expressions are equal
Commutative Property the order of two numbers does not matter when you add or multiply
Associative Property the grouping of more than two numbers does not matter when you add or multiply
Identity Property adding 0, or multiplying by 1, does not change a number
Addition Property of Opposites the sum of its number and its opposite is 0
Zero Property of Multiplication the product of any number and 0 is 0
Distributive Property multiply a sum or difference by a number, by multiplying each term of the sum or difference by the number
