| oligarchy | a type of gov where the power is held by few people (usally by a few wealthy aristocrats |
| democracy | form of gov where citizens have a say in how they are ruled including choosing their leaders and deciding laws (form of gov in which citizens govern themselves) |
| representative democracy | citizens elect officials/representatives that vote on the laws for them (USA) |
| direct democracy | the citizens vote directly on laws (ancient Athens) |
| athens | one of the most powerful city-states in greece, athens was the birthplace of democracy |
| cleisthenes | father of democracy (Athens) |
| Perciles | leader of athenian democracy at its hieght, He promoted the arts and literature, and had many major structures built including the parthenon. he was killed by the disease in athens during the peloponnesian war. |
| assembly | in athens the assembly consisted of the group of citizens who showed up to vote |
| acropolis | is a fortified citadel within a larger city. usually located on top of a hill and at the center of a city |
| agora | was the central meeting area in Ancient Greek cities. Democracy was born at the agora in Athens |
| olympics | an athletic event held by the Ancient Greeks every 4 years ( first was in 776 BCE) |
| Sparta | A powerful Greek city-state and rival to athens, sparta's culture was based around warfare and preparing for battle |
| helots | were serfs or slaves that worked for the spartans. MOst of the people who sparta ruled were helots |
| peloponnesian war | sparta beat athens. the war weakened greece and left it open to attack from king philip ll |
| trireme | a type of boat used by the Ancient Greeks. It had 3 rows of oars on each side |
| philosopher | someone who uses reason and logic to understand the world. In Greece, the early philosophers used reason to explain natural events. |
| socrates | a greek philosopher who is considered to be the founder of western philosophy (focused on logic and reason) |
| Plato | A greek philosopher who founded the academy in Athens and wrote many philosophical dialogues |
| Alexander the Great | A ruler of the Ancient Greece who conquered much of the civilized world from Greece to India, and Egypt. Spread greek culture throughout the lands he conquered, leading to the rise of the Hellenistic cultures |
