Math 7 Chapter 2 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
absolute value The distance a number is from zero on a number line .
integer Any number from the set of zero and positive and negative whole numbers.
graph (on a coordinate plane) To locate a point's position by drawing a dot at the location of its ordered pair.
opposite The sum of a number and its __________ is zero.
x-coordinate The first number of an ordered pair. It corresponds to a number on the horizontal axis.
y-coordinate The second number of an ordered pair. It corresponds to a number on the vertical axis.
graph (on a number line) To draw a point as a dot on a number line at its location.
coordinate plane The intersection of two number lines. The number lines for quadrants that are used to locate a point using ordered pairs.
quadrant One of four regions on a coordinate plane.
x-axis The horizontal axis on a coordinate plane.
y-axis The vertical axis on a coordinate plane.
Origin the intersection of the x-axis and the y-axis. Its ordered pair is (0, 0).
ordered pair A pair of numbers, written in parentheses and separated by a comma, used to locate a point on a coordinate plane.
opposites Numbers that are the same distance from zero, but on opposite sides of zero.
additive inverses Numbers that are opposites.
Additive Inverse Property The sum of any number and its additive inverse is 0>
Subtracting Integers Key Concept To subtract in integer, add its opposite.
Adding Integers With Same Signs Key Concept Add their absolute values. The sum is positive is both integers are positive. The sum is negative if both integers are negative.
Adding Integers With Different Signs Key Concept Subtract their absolute values. The sum is positive if the positive integer's absolute value is greater. The sum is negative if the negative integer's absolute value is greater.
Multiply and divide integers with same signs The product/quotient is positive.
Multiply and divide integers with different signs The product/quotient is negative.
