| fetched | to go after and bring back |
| Garrison | a military camp, fort, or base |
| peppered | To hit repeatedly |
| Constitutes | to make up or form |
| prevail | opponent especially in a long or difficult contest. |
| Agitators | A person who tries to get people angry or upset so that they will support an effort to change a government, etc. |
| Blurts | to say suddenly and without thinking how people will react. |
| stripping | to remove everything |
| Bayonet | A long knife that is attached to the end of a rifle and used as a weapon in battle |
| Subversion | to secretly try to ruin or destroy a government or political system. |
| vile | very bad or unpleasant |
| meddle | To become involved in the activities and concerns of other people when your involvement is not wanted. |
| clutched | to hold on tightly with your hand |
| commission | Position/Job in the military |
| resign | To give up(a job or position) in a formal or official way. |
| scornful | Showing disrespect or disapproval for something. |
| churning | To stir or mix something with force. |
| clambering | to climb or crawl |

| compunction | a feeling of guilt or regret |
| unscrupulous | not honest or fair : doing things that are wrong, dishonest, or illegal |

| decisive | able to make choices quickly and confidently |
| reflected | to show the image of (something) on a surface |
| floundering | to move in an awkward way with a lot of difficulty and effort |
