Short Story Literary Terms
| Term | Definition |

| plot | the sequence of events that make up a story |
| satire | a work of literature that uses humor to make fun of or criticize a belief, group or institution |
| imagery | language that appeals to the 5 senses |
| mood | the emotional atmosphere an author creates through word choice and imagery |
| characterization | in order to create this, the author relies on a character's physical description, dialogue and actions |
| syntax | word order |
| dramatic irony | when the audience knows information that the characters do not know |
| verbal irony | sarcasm |
| theme | the key idea or message an author communicates to the reader through his or her story |
| conflict | a struggle between opposing forces |
| tone | the author's or narrator's attitude toward his/her subject |
| setting | where and when a story takes place |
| situational irony | when the opposite of what we expect happens |
| Naturalism | the belief that human beings are just another living thing on the planet and are not entitled to special treatment |

| climax | the turning point in a story |
