| diction | A writer's choice of words. |
| drama | A story written to be performed by actors before an audience. |
| fiction | A prose narrative in which situations and characters are invented by the writer. |
| figurative language | Language used for descriptive effect, often to imply ideas indirectly. Expressions are not literally true but express some truth beyond the literal level. |
| figure of speech | Figurative language of a specific kind, such as metaphor, personification, or simile. |
| flashback | An interruption in the chronological order of a narrative to describe an event that happened earlier. |
| foreshadowing | An author's use of clues or hints to prepare readers for events that will happen later in a story. |
| genre | A category or type of literature- prose, poetry, and drama. |
| imagery | Descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. |
| irony | A contrast or discrepancy between expectation and reality, or between that is expected and what actually happens. |
