Chapter 4 APES

TermDefinition
atmospheric convection Global patterns of air movement that are initiated by the unequal heating of Earth.
Hadley cell A convection current in the atmosphere that cycles between the equator and 30 degrees North and 30 degrees South.
Ferrel Cell A convection current in the atmosphere that lies between Hadley cells and polar cells.
Coriolis Effect The deflection of an objects path due to the rotation of Earth.
Rain SHadow A region with dry conditions found on the leeward side of a mountain range as a result of humid winds from the ocean causing precipitation on the windward side.
Polar Cell A convection current in the atmosphere, formed by air that rises at 60 degrees North and 60 degrees South and sinks at poles 90 degrees North and 90 degrees South.
Climate The average weather that occurs in a given region over a long period of time.
Weather The short term conditions of the atmosphere in a local area, which include temperature, humidity, clouds, precipitation and wind speed.
Troposphere A layer of the atmosphere closest to the surface of Earth, extending up to approximately 16 km.
Stratosphere The layer of the atmosphere above the troposphere, extending roughly 16 to 50 km above the surface of Earth.
Angle of Sun rays to Earth Angle of sun rays are distorted, and solar energy is weaker when it has to pass through Earth's atmosphere on an angle.
Albedo The percentage of incoming sunlight reflected from a surface.
Earth's tilt Earth's tilt causes incoming sunlight to be weaker in the northern hemishpere where it has to pass through more atmosphere.
Upwelling The upward movement of ocean water toward the surface as a result of diverging currents.
Thermohaline Circulation An oceanic circulation pattern that drives the mixing of surface water and deep water.
ENSO El nino; A reversal of the wind and water currents in the South Pacific

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
