| Makkah (Mecca) | the birthplace of Muhammad - a prosperous city with many trade routes |
| Ka'ba | house of worship - honored many traditional gods with shrines |
| trade routes | roads to travel to different places on for trading |
| Khadijah | the wife of Muhammad - first to convert to Islam - helped Muhammad except that he was the chosen one of God |
| monotheism | belief in only one God |
| polytheism | belief in more then one god |
| Night Journey | a journey Muhammad took on a horse to heaven where he met prophets, and where he met God |
| People of the Book | people of religions that believe in only on God |
| mosques | houses of worship |
| Sunnah | the example that Muhammad set for Muslims about how to live |
| Five Pillars of Faith | the most basic acts of worship for Muslims; faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and making a pilgrimage to Makkah |
| pilgrimage | a journey to a holy site |
| jihad | represents Muslims' struggle with challenges within themselves and the world as they strive to please God |
| shari'ah | the body of Islamic law based on the Qur'an and the Sunnah |
| Shahadah | the first pillar - the profession of faith - there is only one God taught by Muhammad or monotheism |
| Zakat | the third pillar - alms giving or giving to those in need - wealthy people share there riches with the less fortunate |
| Salat | the second pillar - daily ritual prayer - Muslims pray 5 times a day |
| Siyam | the forth pillar - fasting or going without food - Muslim have to fast during the Ramadan, or the ninth month of the Islamic calendar |
| Hajj | the fifth pillar - Muslims must take a pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah at some point in their life |
| External Jihad | also known as lesser jihad - struggle against oppression |
| Internal Jihad | also known as greater jihad - fight against the evil within yourself |
| Imam | leader of prayer in a mosque - like a priest |
