EM Spectrum

Electromagnetic spectrum characteristics

Wave typetrait
gamma rays: made from sun and radioactive elements
gamma rays: used for irradiation- kills germs, sterilize food/ medical equipment; kills cancer
x-ray; made from the sun and stars, OR electricity and tungsten
x-ray: used for astronomy/ medical field/ airports
ultraviolet light: made from the sun, welding, black light, tanning beds
ultraviolet light: dangers skin cancer and cataracts
ultraviolet light: what we can see of it humans can see as a sunburn; insects can see some of it
UV light: used for see pictures of the sun/ planet/ stars
visible light only part of the spectrum we can see ROYGBIV
Infrared light: comes from anything giving off heat
infrared light: used for night vision, security systems, heat seeking missiles, detecting hurricanes
microwaves: used for communications, radar equipment, food preparation
radiowaves: used for radio, TV, cell phone, communicating w/ and analyzing space
