protagonist the main character in a story

theme the main idea in a piece of literature
stanza a group of related lines in a poem
genre types of literature
biography the story of a person's life that is written by a different person
flashback jumping backward in the order of a story
foreshadow hints during a story about something that will happen later
metaphor the comparison of two things without using the word "like" or "as"
irony meaning opposite of what one says
conflict opposing elements or characters in a plot
narrator the person telling the story
autobiography the story of a person's life that is written by that person
simile the comparison of two things using the word "like" or "as"
symbol a word or object that stands for something else
