Chapter 1 Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Chemistry | The study of matter and the changes that it undergoes |
| Matter | Anything that has matter and takes up space |
| Mass | A measurement that reflects the amount of matter |
| Weight | a measure not only of the amount of matter but also of the effect of earth's gravitational pull on that matter |
| Scientific Method | a systematic approach used in scientific study, whether it is chemistry, biology, physics, or other sciences |
| Qualitative Data | Information that describes color, odor, shape, or some other physical characteristic |
| Quantitative Data | Numerical Information |
| Hypothesis | A Tentative explanation for what has been observed |
| Experiment | Set of controlled observations that test the hypothesis |
| Independent Variable | the variable that you plan to change |
| Dependent Variable | the value changes in response to a change in the independent variable |
| Control | a standard for comparison |
| Conclusion | a judgement based on the information obtained |
| Model | visual, verbal, and/or mathematical explanation of experimental data |
| Theory | an explanation that has been supported by many, many experiments |
| Scientific Law | a relationship in nature that is supported by many experiments |
| Pure Research | seeks to gain knowledge for the sake of knowledge itself |
| Applied Research | research undertaken to solve a specific problem |
| Technology | Practical used of scientific information |
