Why did ancient civilizations develop in the valleys such as the Nile, Indus, Tigris and Euphrates? There was a water supply, good farmland, and the rivers could be used for trade and transportation.
Who were the first people to use Iron weapons? The Hittites
The Phoenicians are called the "carriers of civilization" because they did what? They spread culture and learning throughout the ancient world. They traded throughout the Mediterranean Sea.
Which civilization created the 22 character phonetic alphabet? The Phoenicians.
What is one way the civilizations of the Sumerians, the Phoenicians and the Mayans were all similar? They all developed extensive writing systems.
How could someone describe Hammurabi's Code? Hammurabi's Code was the first set of written laws. People were treated differently based on their social class. There were harsh punishments and Hammurabi believed in an "Eye for an Eye."
Why is the Middle East often considered an economic and cultural crossroads between Africa, Asia, and Europe. It is in the center of all of these areas. It is centrally located.
What are the features of a civilization? Civilizations have central governments, complex religions, specialized jobs or occupations, a central writing systems and cities. They DO NOT have economic systems based on money.
How was Mesopotamia organized? There were many small city-states that were independent of one another.
Why did the people of Mesopotamia see their world as a dangerous place? The Tigris and Euphrates rivers often flooded.
What was the role or job of a scribe? They knew how to write so they kept the official or important records.
What is cultural diffusion? Cultural diffusion is the spread of ideas from one group to another. People came into contact by trade and through conflict (fighting.)
