1.) What is the theory of absolutism ? 1: The theory of absolutism is the political belief that one ruler (king/queen) should hold all the power within the boundaries of a country.
2.) What is a divine right ? 2: A divine right was the idea that god created the monarchy and that the monarchs act as god's representative on earth. A king/queen answered only to god not to his or her subject.
3.) What is one cause of absolutism? 3: One cause of absolutism is religious and territorial conflicts created fear and uncertainty.
4.) What is one effect of absolutism ? 4: One effect of absolutism is rulers regulated religious worship social gatherings to control the spread of ideas.
5.) Why did dutch revolt against Spain ? 5: The dutch revolted against Spain because they had different religious beliefs and social class.
6.) What is the significance of England's defeat of the Spanish Armada ? 6: The significance of England's defeat of the Armada is it ended Spain's domination of the Atlantic. And it opened a way for more European and civilizations.
7.) What role did religion play in the struggle between the Spanish and the dutch ? 7: Religion caused the dutch to break away from Spain because their religious rights were taken away.
8.) How did lack of the middle class decline of Spain's economy ? 8: Spanish nobles did not have to pay taxes so the tax burden fell on the lower class and effected the decline of Spain's economy.
9.) Define the definition of "Boya". 9: Boya's are land owning nobles of Russia.
10.) Who was Ivan the terrible ? 10: Ivan the terrible was a leader of Russia who seized power and crowned himself czar.
11.) How did Ivan the terrible deal with his enemies during his "bad period". 11: During Ivan's bad period he would hunt down and murder his enemies.
12.) Why did Peter the Great believe that Russia's future depended on having warm-water port ? 12: Peter the Great believed on having a warm-water port so Russia can compete with the more modern states of Europe.
13.) What were two results of the peace of Westphalia ? 13: One result of the peace of Westphalia were they weakened the Hapsburg states of Spain and Austria. The second result of the peace of Westphalia was they strengthen France by awarding it German territory.
14.) Why did Maria Theresa and Frederick the Great fight two year wars against each other ? 14: The first war Maria and Fredrick the Great fought against each other was because Fredrick the Great wanted the Austrian land of Silesia and he underestimated the strength of Maria so he began the war of the Austrian succession.
15.) Which event had the biggest impact on modern Russia ? Why ? 15: Establishing St. Petersburg effected modern Russia because it improved education and growth. It also improved travel to the west,
16.) What were three differences between Russia and western Europe ? 16: One difference was religious differences. Another difference was the difference in modern technology. One last difference was in military and commercial terms.
17.) What was Peter the Great's primary goal for Russia ? 17: Peter the Great's primary goal for Russia was to strengthen the government and to increase power.
18.) List some causes, participants, and outcomes of the English and Civil wars. 18: - He would not imprison subjects without due to cause. - He would not levy taxes without parliament consent - He would not house soldiers in private homes - He would not impose martial law in peace time
19.) What benefits might absolute monarchs hope to gain by increasing their countries territory ? 19: Some benefits a absolute monarch hope to gain is more land which means more power, and more people to add to the army or neighborhood which means they have more help. (Stronger armies and more people)
20.) What region did Louis XIV control ? 20: France
21.) What is skepticism ? 21: Skepticism is a belief that nothing could be known for certain
22.) How did the French monarchy get stronger ? 22: The French monarchy got stronger by creating skepticism and weakening the nobles power
23.) Who is Philip II ? 23: Philip II is Charles V's son who took control of Portugal but failed in his invasion of England.
24.) Give two reasons for the success of the Dutch in trading. 24: One reason is they let people worship as they wish. Another reason is they had good trading and banking.
25.) Why did the Spanish lose power. 25: The Spanish lost power because the prices of goods rose, unfair taxes, and because they had to borrow money to finance their wars.
