| Hyperbole | An exaggeration or overstatement used for effect. |
| Symbolism | The authors use of a person, place, or object, to represent something other than itself. |
| Mood | The feeling a reader gets from a story. |
| Irony | A contrast between reality and expectation. |
| Simile | A comparison of two unlike things using the words "like" or "as". |
| Imagery | The use of words or phrases that appeal to the readers senses. (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch) |
| Personification | The giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea. |
| Alliteration | The repetition of the same consonant sound or letter at the beginning of words that are close together. |
| Tone | The authors voice or attitude about what he or she is writing. |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two unlike things without the use of "like" or "as". |
