Chemistry Test

Scientists, Atoms, and Elements

QuestionAnswer
What did Democritus discover? He called them "atomos" and said they were tiny, invisible particles that make up the universe. All matter is made of atoms.
What did John Dalton discover? He developed the first useful atomic theory of matter.
What did Sir William Crookes discover? He invented the Cathode Ray Tube aka Crooke's tube.
What did J.J. Thomsom discover? He discovered the Plum Pudding Model and the subatomic particle, electron. Properties: charge, mass, and spin.
What did Robert Millikan discover? He worked on an oil-drop experiment in which he measured the charge on a single electron.
What did Henri Becquerel discover? He discovered radiation.
What did Rutherford discover? He discovered every atom contains a nucleus where it's positive charge and most of it's mass is concerned.
How did the results of Rutherford's experiment differ from his prediction? He expected most of the alpha particles to pass easily through the foil with only slight deflection.
How did Rutherford explain the results of his experiment? He concluded that all of the positive charge & essentially all of the mass of the atom is concentrated in an infinitely small fraction of the total volume.
What particle did Rutherford discover? Nucleus
Who discovered the particles that confirmed his explanation? James Chadwick
What did James Chadwick discover? Neutron
What did Bohr discover? Bohr's model of the atom which is seen as a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons. (Jimmy Neutron)
What is the law of conservation of mass? In a chemical reaction, matter is neither created nor discovered.
What is the law of definite composition? Each compound has a specific ratio of elements.
What is the multiple proportions? It's the basic laws of stoichiometry used to establish the atomic theory alongside the law of conservation of mass & the law of definite proportions.
What are isotopes? Each of 2 or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
What is the mass number and symbol? Atomic mass number (total number of protons and electrons) The symbol is A
What is the atomic number and symbol? Number of protons. The symbol is Z.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
