Literary Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Paradox | A statement that at first contradicts itself but on reflection, turns out to be true |
| Metaphor | A comparison between two unlike things without using 'like' or 'as' |
| Simile | A comparison between two unlike things using 'like' or 'as' |
| Allusion | An indirect reference to something the writer expects the reader to know |
| Tone | Attitude that a writer or character expresses |
| Refrain | A line that is repeated at different times of a literary work |
| Irony | The opposite of what is expected |
| Satire | A literary techniques which ideas, customs, behaviors, or institutions are ridiculed for the purpose of improving society |
| Extended metaphor | A figure of speech that compares two unlike things at some length and in several ways; does not use "like" or "as" |
| Parallelism | A repetition of the same/similar grammatical structure |
| Diction | Writer's choice of words (word choice) |
