Terms and Definitions

Alliteration repitition of initial consonant in a sentenceEx. sweet smell of success
Antagonist principal character in opposition to the protagonist. Sometimes not a person but an obstacle such as a force of nature, society, or inner conflict.
Antonym word that is opposite of another word
Author's Purpose why did the author write the selection? Is the purpose to entertain, to inform, or persuade? Skim the selection and attempt to determine the author's purpose before you read the selection.
Autobiography the story of a person's life written by the person.
Biography the story of a person's life written by another person.
Cause and Effect cause statements stem for actions and events, and effects are happen as a result
Characterization method of telling info about characters to reader. 1) the character's appearance, 2) the character's actions, 3)the character's thoughts, 4) the character's conversations, 5)the reactions of others toward the character
Climax turning point. occurs before resolution. when you know what's going to happen
Compare and Contrast compare - show similarities. contrast - show differences

Conflict struggle between opposing forces in literature
Character vs. Character conflict between characters such as family conflict, trouble with a bully, or difficulties in romance. type - external
Character vs. Nature conflict between a character and force in nature such as a tornado, avalanche, extreme weather conditions or anuy type of natural disaster. type - external
Character vs. Self conflict in character's mind. type - internal Ex. mhave to decide between right or wrong, choices, mixed feelings, etc.
Connections text to self; world or text. The reader can connect what he has read with something else.
Context Clues info within reading selection that helps the reader figure out meanings of challenging words
Dialogue words that a character actually speaks

Figurative Language cannot be taken literally because it was written to create a special effect
Flashback technique in which the author interrupts the plot of story to recreate incident of an earlier time; flashback is often used to provide additional info to reader

Foreshadowing technique that gives readers clues about events that will happen later in story
Generalization when you make assumptions about different events and/or charactersand apply them to new situations
