Transformations

Essential Vocabulary for Unit 3

TermDefinition
Transformations the movement of objects in a coordinate plane
Translation when you slide an object from one part of the coordinate plane to another
Rotation when you turn an object in the coordinate plane
Reflection when you flip or mirror an object in the coordinate plane
Dilation resizing a shape
Scale Factor tells you how much a figure is dilated by
Vertices the corners of an object
Trasformation Sequence the order of movements of an object in the coordinate plane
Similar one object is similar to the other if one can be obtained by a sequence of transformations to the other
Side-Side-Side Similarity (SSS) if ratios of the lengths of the three pairs of corresponding sides are equal, then the triangles are similar.
Side-Angle-Side Similarity (SAS) if the ratios of the lengths of two pairs of corresponding sides are equal and the corresponding angles between the sides are equal, then the triangles are similar.
Angle-Angle Similarity (AA) if two pairs of corresponding angles are equal, then the triangles are similar.
Congruent the same or equal
Corresponding Angles corresponding angles are a pair of matching angles that are in the same spot in two different shapes.
Corresponding Sides corresponding sides are a pair of matching sides that are in the same spot in two different shapes.
