AP Rhetorical Strategies

QuestionAnswer
Alliteration The repetition of intial consonant sounds in words in a sentence. Ex-Sweet Smell of Sucsess
Antagonize Principle character in opposition to the protagonist. Sometimes not a person but an oobstacle such as a force of nature, society or inner conflict.
Antonym A word that is the opposite of another word
Aithors Purpose Why did the author write the selection? Is the pupose to entertain, to inform or to persuade? Skim the seection and attempt to determine the authors purpose before you read.
Biography the story of a persons life written by another person.
Cause and Effect Cause statment stem for actions and events, and effects are what happen as a result of the event or action.
Characterization the method an author uses to communicate inforamation about the characters to the reader. INCLUDES-Characters apperance,actions,thoughts,conversations,and reactions toward others.
Climax the moment whent the action of the story comes to the highest point
Compare and contrast The likes and the differences between two objects or people.
Conclusion the end of a reading selection
Conflict struggle between opposing forcesCharacter vs CharacterCharacter vs NatureCharacter vs Self
connections text to self;world; or text. connecting from one thing in a book or in real life to another

Imagery word and phrases used specifically to help the reader to imagine each of the senses.
Inference reading between the lines
Irony a tone that is created when the speaker intends to mean that which is opposite to the word they are saying
Judge To say something is good or bad
Limerick light or humerous verse
Metaphor a comparison between to like things without useing the words like or as
Mood the overall feeling created by the authors words
narorator the speaker of the story
non-fiction writing that is true and the purpose is to inform
onomatopoeia word that express sounds

Paraphrase to restate in your own words
personification giving lifelike characteristics to inanimate objects
