AP Rhetorical Strategies

| Alliteration | The repetition of intial consonant sounds in words in a sentence. Ex-Sweet Smell of Sucsess |
| Antagonize | Principle character in opposition to the protagonist. Sometimes not a person but an oobstacle such as a force of nature, society or inner conflict. |
| Antonym | A word that is the opposite of another word |
| Aithors Purpose | Why did the author write the selection? Is the pupose to entertain, to inform or to persuade? Skim the seection and attempt to determine the authors purpose before you read. |
| Biography | the story of a persons life written by another person. |
| Cause and Effect | Cause statment stem for actions and events, and effects are what happen as a result of the event or action. |
| Characterization | the method an author uses to communicate inforamation about the characters to the reader. INCLUDES-Characters apperance,actions,thoughts,conversations,and reactions toward others. |
| Climax | the moment whent the action of the story comes to the highest point |
| Compare and contrast | The likes and the differences between two objects or people. |
| Conclusion | the end of a reading selection |
| Conflict | struggle between opposing forcesCharacter vs CharacterCharacter vs NatureCharacter vs Self |
| connections | text to self;world; or text. connecting from one thing in a book or in real life to another |
| context clues | information that helps u figure out words. |
| dialogue | the words that a character speaks |
| evaluate | to examine or judge |
| exposition | the backround informationthat the authhor provides about the setting, plot, character or other essential story elements |
| expository text | text written to explain and convey information about a specific topic. |
| Fable | a narritive intended to convey a moral or lesson to the reader. |
| fact vs opinion | true fact and someones point of view. |
| falling action | a sharp decline in the dramatic tension |
| fiction | an imaginary story, didnt happen |
| figurative language | non-literal language |
| flashback | innterupts story to go back in time |
| folktales | stories passed through generations |
| foreshadowing | gives a clue of what will happen in the future of the story. |
| generalization | when you make assumptions about different events |
| Genre | catagoriesof literature- mystery,horror,suspense,realistic,sports,sports,historisal,adventure,etc. |
| Graphic organizer | a diagram that is used to represtent information-Venn Diagram, T-Charrt,Sequence Chart, Cause-Effect Chart, etc.q |
| Homonym | two or more word that are pronounced the same way but have different meanings. |
| Hyperbole | An exaggerated statement |
| Imagery | word and phrases used specifically to help the reader to imagine each of the senses. |
| Inference | reading between the lines |
| Irony | a tone that is created when the speaker intends to mean that which is opposite to the word they are saying |
| Judge | To say something is good or bad |
| Limerick | light or humerous verse |
| Metaphor | a comparison between to like things without useing the words like or as |
| Mood | the overall feeling created by the authors words |
| narorator | the speaker of the story |
| non-fiction | writing that is true and the purpose is to inform |
| onomatopoeia | word that express sounds |
| Oxymoron | putting two contridictory word togetherEx-jumbo shrimp |
| Paraphrase | to restate in your own words |
| personification | giving lifelike characteristics to inanimate objects |
| plot | the events that occur in the beginning of the story |
| poetry | writing that expresses feelings through rhythmic patterns |
| point of view | perspective in which the story is being told |
| prediction | making an educated guess |
| prefix | letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning |
| protagonist | the good guy of the story |
| reaction | your opinion of the reading material |
| resoloution | the story action after the climax |
| rising action | the part of the story that includes the expositionwhich build the climax |
| rot word | the word that the prefix or suffix is added to |
| sequential order | the order in which the events in the story happen |
| setting | the envirinment of time and place where the action of the story occurs |
| Simile | a comparison using like or as |
| suffix | letters placed at the beginning of the root word |
| summarizing | short yet detailed paragraph that includes all the main points of the paragraph |
| supporting details | details that support the main idea |
| suspense | TECHNIQUE USED TO KEEP THE READER INTERESTED |
| symbol | an image object or action that stands for an idea beyond its literal meaning |
| synonym | words that are similar in spelling and meanings |
| theme | the moral of the story |
| tone | the clues of the story that suggests the writers attitude toward the story |
| visualization | when you are able to see what you are reading |
| voice | the authors style |
