| Author | Person who wrote the story. |
| Illustrator | Person who draws the pictures. |
| Characters | People, animals, objects that the story is about. Necessary parts of stories. |
| Story elements | Author, illustrator, character, setting, personification. |
| Setting | Time and place the story takes place. |
| Personification | When an author brings an inanimate object to life. (Eg. Cogsworth the Clock in the "Beauty and the Beast") |
| Conflict | Problem in the story which triggers the actions. There can be multiple. |
| Person vs. Person | Conflict with another character. Fight or disagreement. |
| Mood | Feeling of the story. Mystery, love, adventure, etc. |
| Dialogue | Talking/Speaking |
| Recognize | to acknowledge formally or take notice of in some definite way |
| Reflect | to think quietly and calmly; to express a thought or opinion resulting from relfection |
| Person vs society | Conflict with society (school, law or tradition. Ex.Student facing peer pressure. |
| Person vs self | Conflict with inner self, problems deciding what to do. Ex. Person faced with tough personal decisions. |
| Person vs. nature | Conflict with elements of nature such as water, snow, heat, wind. Ex. Person trapped in wilderness, person sailing and then a storm comes. |
| Person vs. fate (God or higher power) | Conflict with uncontrollable problems. Person facing the death of a loved one. |
| Characterization | Way an author describes a character. |
| Characterizations-characteristics | physical appearance, manner of speech, beliefs and attitudes, standards, opinions, emotional reactions, choices, intelligence. |
| Protagonist | Central character (hero) usually changes for better or worse and is challenged by an antagonist |
| Antagonist | (bad guy) challenges the protagonist beliefs or values. Can be a real person or a symbol. |
