Short Story Elements and "The Lottery"

| Protagonist | Leading character or one of the major characters |
| Antagonist | A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something (in conflict with main character) |
| Dynamic Character | Character who changes throughout the course of a story/grows and develops during the action |
| Static Character | Character who undergoes little or no inner change/ remains the same during action |
| Flat Character | Two-dimensional character in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a work; described in one sentence |
| Round Character | A character that is complex (many sides) and undergo development, sometimes sufficiently to surprise the reader |
| Exposition | A comprehensive description and explanation of an idea (setting, introduces mood, and characters) |
| Plot | Events that make up a story/series of carefully arranged related incidents |
| Foreshadow | Be a warning (hint) or indication of a future event |
| Tone | The general character or attitude of the writer towards a place, piece of writing, situation |
| Symbolism | The use of an object or action to represent ideas or qualities more than its literal meaning |
| Connotation | An idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning |
| Ritual | A religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions preformed according to a prescribed order |
| Profusely | Exuberantly plentiful; abundant |
| Assemble | Gather together in one place for a common purpose |
| Boisterous | Noisy, energetic, and cheerful; rowdy |
| Reluctant | Unwilling and hesitant; disinclined |
| Conducted | Organize and carry out |
| Jovial | Cheerfully and friendly |
| Shabby | In poor condition through long or hard use or lack of care |
| Paraphernalia | Miscellaneous articles, especially the equipment needed for a particular activity |
| Chant | A repeated rhythmic phrase, typically shouted or sung in unison by a crowd |
| Soberly | Marked by seriousness, gravity, solemnity, etc.; as of demeanor, speech, etc. /Quiet or sedate in demeanor, as persons |
| Petulantly | In a grouchy or bad-tempered way. |
| Stoutly | In a firm and determined way |
