| Tall Tales | Stories with exaggeration; stories with humor. |
| Science Fiction | Ideas included about the future; problems solved using data. |
| Autobiography | Main character is the writer; tells ones life story. |
| Historical Fiction | Setting is a time in history; problem is realistic for time period. |
| Fairy Tale | Ends “happily ever after”; magic/good/evil; unrealistic events. |
| Nonfiction | Explain how something real in life occurred. |
| Fables | Moral to the story; animals with human traits. |
| Biography | Tells about a real person; factual stories about real people. |
| Modern Fantasy | Fiction that is NOT realistic; events could not happen; magic/good/evil |
| Poetry | Evokes emotion; uses words to build sensory impressions; sounds and rhythms of words. |
| Mystery | Clues help understand the problem; will have events to distract the reader. |
| Myths/ Legends | Tries to explain how the world began; takes place before people were on Earth. |
| Realistic Fiction | Fictional characters behave realistically; set in modern times. |
| Folk Literature | Legends/fables/fairy tales; good/ bad characters; unrealistic elements; “Long ago . . .” |
